Franklin Eastman was a craftsman employed on construction of the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. from 1938 to 1940. Eastman recalled beginning his career as a lather in Florida in 1925 and circumstances that led to his work as a shop steward during construction of the National Gallery. He explained metal lathing techniques used in the walls, ceilings, and rotunda and the work environment of the construction project. He recalled other workers and described their feelings about the project. The interview is supplemented by Eastman's detailed explanation and diagram of lathing techniques.
